Small business is critical to the economic prosperity and commercial diversity of region and collectively provides the vast majority of jobs for people working in the region. The most recent count of businesses in the region (ABS, 2014) suggests over 29,000 registered businesses in the South West Metropolitan Region.

From 2009 to 2014, an additional 1,647 businesses were registered in the region, with the most dominant industry sectors in terms of number of businesses being:

  • Construction 5,466 – down 115 or 2.1% since 2009
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services 3,927 – up 474 or 13.7% since 2009
  • Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services 3,410 – up 422 or 14.1% since 2009
  • Financial and Insurance Services 2,444 – up 474 or 24.1% since 2009
  • Retail Trade 1,841 – down 99 or 5.1% since 2009
  • Health Care and Social Assistance 1,804 – up 456 or 25.3% since 2009
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing 1,735 – down 88 or 4.8% since 2009
  • Manufacturing 1,466 – down 125 or 7.9% since 2009
